Akwa Ibom Deputy Governor Resigns

According to TheWill, Akwa Ibom State Deputy Governor, Mr. Nsima Ekere has resigned from office with immediate effect. TheWill said Ekere tendered his resignation letter this morning after he was tipped of an advanced plot to begin impeachment proceedings against him on Thursday, following heightened tension between himself and Governor Godswill Akpabio over his governorship ambition in 2015.

Re: EFCC : From Hope to Hogwash Sonala Should Apologize to Nigerians

The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has been drawn to an article by Sonala Olumhense entitled, EFCC: From Hope to Hogwash, which was published online by Saharareporters on Sunday October, 28, 2011. Olumhense in the ill-tempered piece appeared cross with the EFCC under the leadership of Ibrahim Lamorde for the singular (fallacious) reason that it failed to submit its Annual Report to the National Assembly by September 30, 2012 as demanded by law. This supposed failure, in Olumhense's estimation, is evidence that Lamorde and the system which he runs is fraud.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 arraigned five suspects before a Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on a four count charge bordering on conspiracy to store one hundred and eighty five( 185) Metric Tons of automotive gas oil, (also called diesel) without appropriate license.
The suspects: Captain Odeghe Andrew, Engineer Ebinum Alex, Jelili Lateef (still at large), Sunday Buluku (still at large) and Monday Osasuwa (still at large) were arraigned before Justice James Tsoho.

One of the charge reads: "That you captain Odeghe Andrew, Engineer Ebinum Alex, Jelili Lateef, Sunday Bukulu, Monday Osasuwa, on or about 31st May, 2012 at Lagos within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court, being the Master-in- Command and crew of the vessel MT. Floris conspired to store aboard the said vessel One Hundred and Eighty Five (185) Metric Tons of automotive gas oil without appropriate license under section 1 of the Petroleum Act, Cap. P9 Laws of the federation of Nigeria, 2004 and thereby committed an offences punishable under section 6 of the Petroleum Act, Cap. P9,
Laws of the federation of Nigeria, 2004".

When the charges were read to them, they pleaded not guilty. Prosecution counsel, Ben Ubi, informed the court that the EFCC was ready to proceed to trial. However, defence counsel, Victor Opare, informed the court that he had filed an application for bail and prayed the court to hear the application. The judge obliged.
He argued that the offence for which his clients were docked is bail able and urged the court to consider the plight of one of the accused persons, Captain Odeghe Andrew who has some health issues, in granting them bail. This claim of ill health was contested by Ubi who demanded proofs from the defence.
Justice Tsoho, after listening to their arguments, admitted the accused persons to bail in the sum of two million naira and one surety in like sum. The surety must be a resident of Lagos and have a property in the metropolis. He must also be ready to provide original documents of the property and the title verified by the EFCC. In addition, the surety must provide evidence of three years tax payments.
Justice Tsoho adjourned the case to January 22, 2013 and ordered that the accused persons be remanded in Ikoyi prison.

EFCC ARRAIGNS THREE OVER N66.5m SCAM

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, arraigned the trio of Kachy Kennedy Okoye, Usong Ibor Matthew, Igberaese Lawry, before Justice Christopher Balogun of the Lagos High court, Igbosere, on a thirteen count charge of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence. Specifically, they were alleged to have conspired to defraud one Lady Lora Marire of a total sum of Sixty Six Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N66.5Million) under the pretence of helping to register her as a contractor with the Nigerian Ports Authority and offering her a contract to build one hundred units of duplex at Lekki, Lagos.

Four other individuals involved in the scam are at large. They are: Tony Elijah; John Williams; Engr. Chude Ngini and Alkali Hammed.

There are indications that the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Nsima Ekere has resigned from his position.
Details of the development are still cloudy, a competent source just informed our correspondent that the news is filtering into the State capital, Uyo this evening.
The Deputy Governor was said to have given personal reasons for his action.
It is not yet clear if this is as a result of any disagreement with the Governor, Godswill Akpabio

In a press statement by Ekere's media aide, Inemesit Ina, the former deputy governor thanked the Governor and the people of the state for the opportunity to serve. He wished the governor and the entire cabinet well for the remaining duration of the administration.

N18.3bn loan: Commission recommends punishment for Oyinlola failures

The Commission of Enquiry set up by Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola to probe the activities of the immediate past Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola on the procurement of N18.38 billion loan has indicted him on the basis of leadership failure and recommended appropriate punishment to be meted out.

The Commission was also set up to investigate how the ex- Governor managed other contacts between 2003 and November 2010.

Arik Air has confirmed that the body of a young Nigerian man was found Friday in the undercarriage compartment of an Arik aircraft returning from London.
The spokesman for Arik, Ola Adebanji, confirmed that the man was found after the aircraft returned from London. He said no identification was found on the corpse and that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, is already handling the matter.
Officials of the airline said the man, believed to be a stowaway, must have hidden himself there long before the flight took off and must have died possibly out of suffocation.
They did not say how the unknown man beat the airport security network to smuggle himself into the aircraft.

Facebook posts loss despite rise in ad revenues

The world’s most popular online social network, Facebook, has posted a loss of $59m despite recording revenues rise of 32 per cent during the third quarter. The company revealed that its income rose to $1.26bn, between July and September 2012.

Governor of Sokoto State, Northwest Nigeria, Aliyu Wamakko, has flogged a manager of Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, for failing to supply electricity to his community.

Premium Times, an online news portal reports that the governor flogged the manager and ordered his security officials to assault two other PHCN staff.

The management of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, KEDC, a subsidiary of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, accused the Governor of assaulting the workers.

The Acting Managing Director of the Company, Mohammed Adamu, made this known at a press briefing late Monday at the company’s Doka office in Kaduna.

Mr. Adamu explained that the staff was summoned by the governor and was beaten to a pulp by the Governor and some of his aides.

“On Saturday, 20th October, 2012, an unusual and unfortunate event took place which was beyond our comprehension. On the said date our business manager, Gwiwa Business Unit, Sokoto state, Moses Osigwe, was invited by the Executive Governor of the State, Aliyu Magatarkada Wamakko to his personal residence, over the issue of lack of power supply to his hometown, Wamakko, as a result of a failed 2.5MVA transformer.
