Governors At War Over Jonathan & Amaechi: Set for Showdown

Nigerian governors under the aegis of Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF, elected a new chairman on Friday but it appears the battle over the control of the 36 member body has just started. 

OluFamous.Com gathered that the Presidency is secretly working to ensure that Governor Rotimi Amaechi is not recognized as Chairman of the Governors Forum. The situation is getting messier than any one could have imagined. See the unfolding drama below...

Presently, the incumbent chairman of the NGF, Governor Amaechi and his challenger, Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State are both claiming victory, though through different processes.

While Governor Jang, who is secretly being supporting by the Presidency, claimed that he was endorsed as the candidate of the PDP Governors, who has the majority in the Forum, he, surprisingly, lost to Governor Amaechi at the main election.

But is an endorsement the same thing as victory in the main election?

Few hours after Amaechi's emergence as Chairman, the Akwa Ibom State Governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum, Godswill Akpapio, addressed the press announcing Jang’s victory.

A new twist was added to the drama on Saturday, when Jang and members of some governors who pledged allegiance to his leadership held their inaugural meeting in Abuja. After the meeting, Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, who was introduced as vice-chairman, read a communiqué to the media.

Mimiko while reading the document said the meeting was attended by 18 governors. He also noted that Jang as the new chairman of the body had “vowed to unite members of the forum, work for the interest of the forum and the country.”

Governor Mimiko said their faction has “resolved to secure a befitting permanent secretariat outside any governors’ lodge.”

The break-out governors, who spoke at the end of the briefing, insisted that they endorsed Jang for the election. Those who spoke were: Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Isa Yuguda, Shema, Akpabio and Peter Obi (Anambra State).

While speaking, Governor Akpabio said:

“Yesterday, even before the formal meeting of the governors’ forum, it was agreed the chairmanship of the forum be zoned to the PDP which is the party with the largest number of governors in the forum.

“There was a meeting of the PDP Governors’ Forum. The decision of the Northern Governors’ Forum was announced and you need to know that as Nigerians, that chairmanship of the forum should be two years in the South and two years in the North.

“That has been the resolution of the governors. And so it was incumbent upon the northern governors’ forum to meet to bring out the leadership before presenting it to the governors’ forum.

“Yesterday, Governor Aliyu Babangida who is the chairman together with Governor Suswam of Benue came up with Jang as the new chairman and presented him to the PDP governors’ forum and accordingly, the PDP governors’ forum formally adopted Jang.

“The PDP Governors’ Forum would work with Jang as chairman and Mimiko as vice-chairman of the NGF.”

Suswam, who is the vice-chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum added, “Yesterday (Friday), the meeting of the northern governors unanimously adopted the new leadership led by Jang and the northern governors are strongly behind the new leadership of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum led by Jang and supported by Mimiko, the Iroko.”

Similarly, Katsina State Governor, Ibrahim Shema, who attended the meeting said, “Until yesterday (Friday) morning, myself and Governor Yuguda of Bauchi and Amaechi of Rivers scheduled to vie for the election.

“But in the interest of peace and prosperity, we honoured the governors’ forum as myself and Yuguda decided to step down to allow the Northern Governors’ Forum to produce a candidate acceptable to all of us.

“And the northern governors on their own decided to adopt a consensus candidate in the person of the Governor of Plateau State who was presented to the PDP Governors’ Forum and was graciously accepted and they applauded the effort of both myself and Yuguda for making sure that the governors’ forum continue to serve the interest of this nation.

“Our position is that we stepped down to honour this nation and this forum so that we can have a united front.”

In the same vein, Yuguda said, “19 of us endorsed Jang.”

Asked whether he was sure that those who endorsed Jang voted for him during the election, Mimiko could not give an appropriate answer. He said, “Go and ask those who claimed to have conducted election.”

But in his reaction to the claims of the defeated group, Governor Amaechi said: 

"the election was transparent... I believe the governors who own the forum know who their chairman is. The fact is that the people in Port Harcourt and Rivers as a whole are excited over the victory.”

The Governors who voted for Amaechi are:

Babatunde Fashola (Lagos); Babangida Aliyu (Niger); Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti); Rauf Aregbesola (Osun); Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo); Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun); Adams Oshiomhole (Edo).

Aliyu Wamako (Sokoto); Rochas Okorocha (Imo); Umaru Al-Makura (Nasarawa); Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano); Sule Lamido (Jigawa); Kashim Shettima (Borno); Ibrahim Geidam (Yobe); Abdul-Aziz Yari (Zamfara) and Murtala Nyako (Adamawa).

Asari Dokubo is back again! The militant leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force has vowed to deal with Governor Rotimi Amaechi decisively if, for any ,reason Amaechi's ambition makes it impossible for President Goodluck Jonathan to be re-elected president in 2015.

"President Goodluck Jonathan will win in 2015. If they do not allow him to win, they will not be able to handle the consequences," Asari threatened.

The PDP in Rivers State, working with anti-Amaechi agents, have already declared that Amaechi is not the Chairman of Nigerian Governors' Forum. They said Jonah Jang of Plateau State is the Chairman.

On his part Asari, in a phone-in radio programme in Port Harcourt on Saturday, said Amaechi’s political ambition did not tally with the ambition of the people of Niger Delta. As such, he said the governor would be
“treated like a traitor” for standing against Jonathan ahead of 2015.

In the words of Asari: “Amaechi and his commissioners can go back to slavery and continue to serve the northerners, who claim to be born to rule. We will never go back to slavery. We know the quality of those who are commissioners in Rivers State.

“Amaechi and his ambition must be tied to the ambition of his people. In Kano, Amaechi said he would run as vice-president, if invited. I speak with all sense of responsibility. The oppressed people of the Niger Delta, through President Jonathan, will win in 2015. We will win clearly and convincingly.

“Amaechi is a traitor and he will be treated like a traitor. Amaechi is not more Ikwerre than me. It is about liberty to rule. Amaechi wants to take us back to slavery. It will not be possible. The era of northern godfathers is gone.

"An end must come to the suppression, oppression, repression and marginalisation of the people of the Niger Delta. The South-South and South-East people have been brushed aside for too long. People of the North said they would make Nigeria ungovernable for Jonathan, if he won in 2011, which they are doing.”

The graduate unemployment rate in Nigeria is 80 per cent yet these young people that are abusing and mocking my friend and brother Mallam Nasir El Rufai for saying that he has two daughters that have masters degrees but who cannot find jobs do not seem to appreciate the gravity of their own situation or understand the point that he was trying to make.

Nasir ...was simply speaking up for the very youths and jobless graduates that are now mocking and insulting him because of his comment. I assure you that his daughters will never starve and they can get jobs anywhere in the world or even end up working in any of his own numerous companies and business concerns if they so choose.

He was only trying to use their plight as an example of the sad condition that Nigeria has found herself in where only two out of every ten graduates can find jobs. If we put that in proper perspective it means that out of every one thousand graduates only 200 will find jobs and it means that out of every 10,000 graduates only 2000 will find jobs. This is as a consequence of the economic mess that the Jonathan administration has created in the last three years.

The unemployment rate today has NEVER been as bad as it is today in our entire history. That is what Nasir was trying to point out only because he is humane and he empathises with the youth. He feels their pain. Those young people that do not get the point he was trying to make and that are mocking him and subjecting him and his daughters to ridicule and insults for saying what he said deserve to go through the suffering and frustration that they are experiencing in life.

Their colleagues and age-mates from other parts of the world have jobs and they are excelling and doing well simply because they live in functional, well-organised and well-led societies whose leaders care for their welfare and which have strong and booming economies. That is what Nasir wants for Nigeria and the Nigerian youth but most of them just don't get it.

Well the joke is on them and not him and his daughters. Ignorance is a terrible diesease. Those youths ought to be thanking God that some of us that are leaders in the political class actually care about such issues and wish to highlight them. The truth is that most Nigerian politicians don't and they really just don't ''give a damn''.

I commend Nasir for his courage, for the fact that he can cite his daughter's cases as an example and for his efforts. Those young people on twitter and fb that have been insulting and mocking him ought to cut him some slack.

Another Deadly Islamic Sect Emerges; Kills 26 Soldiers

As Nigeria grapples with the terror activities of the fundamentalist Boko Haram sect, another terror group, Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa, MOJAO, has emerged.

On Thursday, the Jihadist group claimed responsibility for a twin suicide bombing attack at the border of Nigeria and Niger. No fewer than 26, mostly Nigerien soldiers, were killed and about 30 injured, in the multiple attacks.

MOJAO spokesman, Abu Walid Sahraoui, said those they killed are “the enemies of Islam.”

There are serious fears in security circles that MOJAO may infiltrate the country due to the porous nature of Nigeria’s borders. According to Punch, the Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro, had last week said there were 1,497 illegal routes into the country.

MOJAO, a splinter group of the international terror group, al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, is after military operatives and facilities of countries that are complementing France’s efforts in quelling terrorists’ insurgency in Mali.

Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Bukina Faso are involved in military operations in Mali.

According to a highly place security official: “We now have to prevent them from infiltrating Nigeria; we have enough Boko Haram challenges. Don’t forget that members of Boko Haram, who were dislodged from Sambisa Games Reserve and other camps in Borno State fled to neigbouring states and the Niger Republic. So many of them from Abadan, Malam Fatori and other villages, are now refugees in Difa, Niger Republic. They can decide to pitch tents with MOJAO."

I can’t find jobs for my daughters - Mallam Nasir El-Rufai says

While speaking at a lecture organized by the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja Branch yesterday Thursday May 23rd, former FCT minister, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, said despite his connections, he's yet to secure jobs for his two daughters, who are both holders of Masters Degrees.

He said this while pointing out Nigeria's unemployment problem, saying the country needed to create three million jobs yearly to tackle the problem. El-Rufai said: 

“Forty-two per cent of Nigerian youths are unemployed. I have two daughters with Masters Degrees and they are unemployed. They have been at home for more than a year and I cannot get a job for them. We are sitting on a demographic time bomb and unless we have visionary leaders that are able to plan for the future, we will have a huge problem."

El-Rufai can't find jobs for his daughters? Wow! The situation is really getting worse. And every year fresh graduates are pushed into the labour market. Thank God that there are people who like to read about other people. (LIBers kwenu! Lol). If not, where will I be by now? :-)

Delta: Ex-LG chairman jailed for paying wife N110,000 monthly imprest

The former chairman of Patani Local Government Area of Delta State, Mr Austin Bebeteidoh, has been sentenced to three years in jail for paying his wife a monthly imprest of N110,000, thereby contravening Section 19 of the ICPC Act.

The former chairman was charged to court by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in 2007, on a seven-count charge of violating Sections 16,19 and 25 of the ICPC Act. 

He was accused of converting for his personal use the sum of N7million overdraft facility he obtained on behalf of Patani Local Government Council from the New Nigerian Bank Plc and another sum of N710,000 which he purportedly used for hiring a vehicle for official use. 

Mr  Bebeteidoh was also accused of approving for fueling of his wife’s car the sum of N110,000 monthly as imprest, even though his wife had no official car.

Justice G.B Briki-Okolosi, while delivering his judgement on Thursday, discharged and acquitted the accused on counts 1-5 but found him guilty on counts 6 and 7. He then sentenced the former local government chairman to three years with an option of N200,000 fine on count 6 and another N200,000 on count 7.

Meanwhile, the ICPC has arrested an officer of the Nigerian Prison Service, ASP Ikwuobe Yusuf, and his accomplice, Usman Musa, for operating a fake employment syndicate through which they extorted hundreds of thousands of naira from applicants.

ASP Yusuf is alleged to have collected the sum of N100,000 from 70 applicants through  Musa who promised to offer the applicants employment with National Task Force to combat illegal importation and smuggling of goods, small arms, ammunition and light weapons.

The suspects were arrested in Kano and Kaduna states and have been transferred to the ICPC headquarters for further investigation.

Yahoo is buying online blogging forum Tumblr for $1.1 billion as CEO Marissa Mayer tries to rejuvenate an internet icon that had fallen behind the times.

YouTube launches paid channels, promises more

YouTube on Thursday launched a pilot program of paid channels for its online video service, calling it part of an effort “that enables content creators to earn revenue for their creativity.”

The Google-owned video-sharing service said the launch with “a small group of partners” starts Thursday with subscription fees starting at 99 cents per month.

“Every channel has a 14-day free trial, and many offer discounted yearly rates,” a YouTube blog post said.

Obasanjo shares 40% cassava bread with African leaders

Former Nigeria’s President ,Olusegun Obasanjo, took the  40 percent cassava flour inclusion in bread to Tanzania recently as he urged the Tanzania President to promote the use of cassava in confectioneries in his country to transform agriculture.

He noted that the use of cassava flour in bread would stimulate the demand for the root crop, create jobs and, more importantly, make farmers proud.

Obasanjo who is the Goodwill Ambassador for the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) was in Tanzania for the  inauguration of  the IITA Science Building in Dar es Salaam.

Tintswalo Ngobeni, 22, fled to England from the southern African nation as a teenager after she caught the attention of the millionaire monarch, a notoriously oppressive ruler known for his lavish lifestyle.

As part of Swazi custom, King Mswati III, 45, is permitted to choose a new bride every year.

Nigeria is highest importer of bullet proof vehicles

Nigeria has overtaken Iraq, Afghanistan and Latin American countries as the world’s biggest importer of bullet proof (armoured) vehicles.

It is estimated that about 30 percent of customers for armoured vehicles worldwide come from Nigeria.

In the last few years, manufacturers of armoured vehicles have exported an estimated 800 to 900 units to Nigeria at the cost of more than N60 billion.


This was made known to journalists during the launch of the Land Rover Defender (AVM) recently in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.

The British car maker said it will provide maintenance training for the Nigerian Defence forces or any institution that imports more than 200 units of Land Rover Defender Armoured Vehicle Modifier (AVM) vehicles.

In 2011 alone, Nigeria imported 600 and 1,000 armoured vehicles, coming behind Iraq, Afghanistan and Latin America.

But recent figures, however, indicate that Nigeria has overtaken these countries on account of growing insecurity, as well as a seemingly love by the elite for armoured vans.

While the position of Iraq and Afghanistan as major importers of armoured vehicles is understandable because of the war situation in those regions, not a few have wondered why Nigeria should be number one in the world.

It costs between N60million and N80million to armour an imported Sport Utility Vehicle, depending on the different levels of fortification, while the starting price to armour a saloon cars is put at N45million and above, according to manufacturers sources.

Describing the position of Nigeria on armoured vehicle importation rating as no exaggeration, Huan Ka Kyui, a high ranking official of an armoured vehicle manufacturing company in Thailand, said that the first time his company received a request for an armoured car from a Nigerian was as far back as in 2003.

Since then, he said the number has increased steadily.

John Graham, Brand Manager Armoured, Military and AVM (Armoured Vehicle Modifier) Programme for the Jaguar Land Rover group, said Nigeria is the emerging market for anti-ballistic vehicles.

He added that armoured vehicles are classified into Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) which can be used for military operations, Cash-In-Transit (C-I-T), ambulances, mobile clinics and passenger vehicles.

Special Purpose Vehicles are mostly purchased by banks and security operatives, while the passenger vehicles are used by individuals and government at various levels.

“As the government needed to import fuel to augment local consumption, it enriched its cronies who engaged in fraudulent importation of fuel through fake mother and daughter vessels. Most of the 150 private jets in the country today are owned by fraudulent fuel importers.

“Last year, the IMF and its local lackeys claimed that the economy would collapse if petrol was not sold at N141 per litre. But with massive strikes and protests, the price was reduced to N97. Did the economy collapse? These are voodoo economists.”

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, said this while reacting to the latest call by the IMF for the removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria.

He also, while speaking with Punch, said corruption had been encouraged by the ill-advice Nigerian political leaders had taken from the International Monetary Fund, IMF.

“I hope the Jonathan regime will have the courage to ask the IMF to name one country that has succeeded after implementing its anti-people’s prescriptions. There is no success story anywhere in the world. 

“Let the IMF be honest to tell Nigerians the cost of producing a litre of [crude] oil. You will be shocked!" said Falana. 

OluFamous.Com gathered that that the IMF is pushing President Goodluck Jonathan to embark on a total removal of fuel subsidy to, according to them, ensure fiscal adjustment.

Why We Can't Arrest Asari Dokubo ––Nigeria Police

“I am not afraid of arrest. I am saying it bold and clear without mincing words, Nigeria will be history if I am arrested. I am daring them to arrest me if they can. If they don’t, they are cowards and shame on them.”

These were the words of Asari Dokubo, a militant leader, daring the police or anyone to arrest him for his threat to set Nigeria on fire if President Goodluck Jonathan is not elected in 2015.

The President, the police, the military, the SSS and others kept quiet in a move many believed to be due to the fact that Asari is close to the President and enjoys billions of Naira contract from him.

Police Force spokesman, CSP Frank Mba said, “If we find anybody committing any offence, we will bring the full weight of the law on them. But, we will not go out of our way to get involved in chasing frivolities; we are not politicians, we are a law enforcement agency.

“We won’t be dragged into any controversy. If the police or any other security agency deems it relevant and exigent to carry out its function, it will carry it out. The most important thing is that the Nigeria Police Force is a creation of law and guided by law.

“We will not be stampeded into controversies or unnecessary political crossfire. We will focus on our job and act when it’s necessary for us.”

You may wish to know that Pastor Tunde Bakare was summoned for questioning by the security agencies over comments he made while preaching in his church few months back. But now the Police is saying what no one can really understand.

The Millions I Gave Obasanjo For Electection And Other Issues ––Orji Uzor Kalu

Wondering how much people like President Goodluck Jonathan were worth before they joined politics, the former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, has said he should be a major share holder in PDP.

“I made millions before joining politics. I was doing business between Maiduguri and the East. I carried fish from Maiduguri to the East and palm oil from the East to Maiduguri. So, I had money and invested so much in the PDP. 

“If the party is a company, I would have been a major shareholder. I and (Saminu) Turaki spent more on the party than any other Nigerian. How much did (President Goodluck) Jonathan have before he became the President?

"I was the first to give the party N100m to register. I was also the first to give Obasanjo N100m to campaign during the 1999 election.”

Kalu said this as ‘Guest of the Week’ on a Kaduna-based radio station, Liberty FM on Saturday.

On the frosty relationship between him and Obasanjo, Kalu said, “I fell apart with Obasanjo on the issue of third term. He wanted to be a life President. Nobody can tell me that Obasanjo was not interested in a third term. Huge money was involved in the project.

"Two senators from my state came with the money and I asked them to return it.

“It was the then President of America, George Bush, who genuinely derailed the third term agenda. I told Bush about it and that is why Obasanjo hates me. Bush told him that it was not possible in a constitutional democracy. I try to avoid him (Obasanjo) at public functions.”

Kalu also stated categorically that the Igbos will not vote for Jonathan in 2015.

It has become so bad that graduates are looking for driver jobs because there are no jobs. Graduates are serving as waiters in hotels and we say that we are a great country. During my time as minister, $1.5 was one naira. Two naira was £1. Now it is N240 to £1 and N160 to $1. That was how powerful we were. And they say we are not a failed state. If we are not a failed state, then we are a fast failing state. The earlier we realise it, the better. Nigeria needs emergency. President Goodluck Jonathan should use his power as the President to declare the whole of Nigeria an emergency state.

How do you deal with the "NEGATIVE" member of the team?

It is very common that we find negative personalities in a team. 
Common Negative personalities: 
1. Recognition Seeker 
2. Topic Jumper 
3. Devil's Advocate 
4. Works as a standalone unit 
5. One do not reporting periodically 
6. Problem smoother/withdrawer 
7. 'I know all' types 
8. Gossip creator 
9. Aggressor 
10. Dominator 
..... 
A team member may/not have more than one problems listed above. 

Some times it may be temporary behavior or a reflection of his/her attitude. 
If it is a temporary one, we can heal the problem by chatting/mentoring. 

But it is reflection of the attitude, we have to reiterate the expectations from the member, have to create some check points and validate periodically. 

If there is a change in the situation, we can reiterate the process for couple of times and most of the times, the member will get onto the track. 

If not, at the last chance, after working with HR dept., we may have to get rid of the member. 

The reason is, we look for people with right aptitude and right attitude. 
Some times, we can compromise to the aptitude but not attitude. 
Aptitude can be trained. Not the attitude.

1.    It has become necessary for me to address you on the recent spate of terrorist activities and protracted security challenges in some parts of the country, particularly in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Kano, Plateau and most recently Bayelsa, Taraba, Benue and Nasarawa states.  These unfortunate events have led to needless loss of lives and property of many innocent Nigerians including members of our security forces.

2.   The recent killing of security operatives by a cult group in Nasarawa state is particularly condemnable. I have directed that no effort or expense be spared in identifying and bringing to justice all those who had a hand in the killing of the operatives.

Canadians use average of $220,000 in public health care over lifetime

Canadians consume, on average, just over $220,000 in publicly funded health-care services over a lifetime, newly published data show.

Spending is fairly consistent across income groups, despite significant differences in the health status of rich and poor, according to the analysis from the Canadian Institute for Health Information.

People in the lowest-income group have $237,500 in lifetime health costs, compared with $206,000 for the highest-income group. The wealthy live an average of five years longer than the poor. But the wealthy also tend to be healthier, so their lifetime cost to the health-care system tends to be less.

“That five-year gap is one of the more macabre details of the study,” Keith Denny, senior researcher for health systems analysis and emerging issues at CIHI, said in an interview. “It evens things out a bit.”

Drones move one step closer to unmanned pizza delivery

CAMP BASTION, AFGHANISTAN—The small group of U.S. marines at a remote base in northern Helmand province was running low on ammunition after days of fierce fighting.

The road in to the base near the village of Shurakay was too dangerous for a resupply convoy, and there were so many Taliban fighters that a helicopter crew trying to fly in would have been at serious risk.

Still, the marines soon heard the soft thwack of rotor blades. As they looked up that January day, a glimpse of aviation’s future flew into view.

An unmanned K-MAX helicopter eased into a hover and gently descended until a pallet of ammunition dangling beneath it touched the ground. The cargo hook released itself and the helicopter rose again, turned and flew off.

46 branches of RCCG were burnt down in 2011 – Pastor Adeboye

Speaking yesterday in Jos while dedicating the headquarters of the Maranatha Covenant Church International, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church, Pastor Enoch Adeboye stated that over 46 branches of the church were burnt down in the violence following the 2011 elections in Northern Nigeria.

According to Vanguard, “he made this known in Jos on Wednesday while dedicating the the Maranatha Covenant Church International headquarters noting that Christians in the North were being persecuted innocently.”

The Managing Director of Guarantee Trust Bank Mr Segun Agbaje, has said private jets in Nigeria are worth $3.75 billion. He added that there are over 150 private jets owned by high networth individuals in the country.

Agbaje said each category of jet costs $25m, which carries both local and international registrations.
