Eight-year-old Shafay Is The Youngest Microsoft Tech Certified Specialist

KARACHI: Shafay Thobani, an eight-year-old child has won the honour of being the world’s youngest Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist, Geo News reported.

Born on March 13, 2004, Shafay grew interested in computers ever since he was a baby.

On April 9, 2012, Shafay appeared in the Prometric test and secured 91 per cent marks, thus making him the world’s youngest Microsoft Certified Training Specialist (MCTS) at the age of eight years and 24 days.

The young man is certified professional in Microsoft Windows 7 Configuration and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2. Before appearing in the exam, he remained under training of Microsoft certified trainers for 13 months.

His trainer Faisal Durrani said it was a challenge for him to teach complicated concepts such as Domain Name System (DNS) and Internet Protocol (IP) address to a child as young as Shafay. “So we split the 40-hour course designed for grown-up IT specialists into 13 months for the child. We taught him by giving him easy examples in order to grasp the concepts. Teaching him for three to four hours everyday, we would also allow him breaks to let him be the normal kid that he is, swimming, playing football or rollerblading,” said Mr Durrani.

Speaking of the boy’s main areas of interest, Shafay’s father Dr. Shah Thobani said he liked network and communication programming. “He has already completed 65 per cent of Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization, too,” he added.

“Shafay was born in 2004, the same year Arfa was declared the world’s youngest Microsoft Certified Professional at the age of nine. Arfa was an inspiration for us and I hope that Shafay, too, would be a role model for more children to show their tremendous achievements,” Dr Thobani said.

Shafay said, “I am proud of myself and I will work for Pakistan in any way possible.”

Former Vice President (Africa) at the World Bank and Minister under former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, yesterday said that both the late President Umaru Yar’Adua and his successor, Goodluck Jonathan’s regimes ‘’squandered’’ $67 billion (about N11 trillion) oil money left in two separate accounts by Obasanjo.
Ezekwesili said that the two administrations squandered $45 billion (N7.065 trillion) left in the Foreign Reserve and another $22 billion (about N3.454 trillion) left in the Excess Crude Account, bringing the total amount of money squandered to about $67 billion or N10.619 trillion.
Ezekwesili spoke while delivering the Convocation Lecture of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN. She noted that Nigerians had lost dignity because of ravaging poverty arising from poor choices of the elite, corruption and lack of investment in education.

Businesses Struggle, Churches and Bars Boom

It is increasingly becoming obvious that the two fastest growing endeavours in Nigeria today are churches and bars, at least in the Southern part of the country, where the Islamist fundamentalists, Boko Haram, are not bombing churches and bars. If you have been observant, you will notice that the number of churches and bars in your neighbourhood has increased tremendously in the last five years.

EFCC Press Release: Retired Army Colonel Docked Over N34m Scam

Col. Eugene Okpala (rtd)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday January 17, 2013 arraigned Eugene Okpala, a retired Colonel, before the Federal High Court, Enugu on a seven count charge of forgery, and obtaining money under false pretences.
Okpala and others (still at large) in August 2008 allegedly conspired and sold a parcel of land at Independence Layout, Enugu belonging to Chief Philip Asiodu to Dominion City Church for                    N34million (thirty four million naira).
The Church which petitioned the Commission claimed it bought the land after inquiries at the Ministry of Lands indicated that the proprietary rights to the land originally leased to Asiodu by the government in 1977 had been transferred to Col. Okpala (rtd). Based on this information, the Church negotiated and bought the property from Col. Okpala for N34m plus a five percent agency fee. The transaction was allegedly funded on behalf of the church by Bank PHB Plc (now Keystone Bank Limited).

They will be docked before Justice Mohammed Idris on two separate charges of Money laundering and False Declaration of Assets.
Aroje was one of two Malaysia-based Nigerian undergraduate fraudsters arrested by the EFCC in the closing weeks of 2012 at the 1004 Housing Estate, Victoria Island,   Lagos following a tip- off. The 25 year-old indigene of Okene, Kogi State claims to be a student of Computer Science at the Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University, Malaysia. But the Commission’s investigation fingered him as the arrow head of an intricate web of internet fraud scheme that traverse two continents.

His accomplice, Tafida Ibrahim is a Bureau De Change operator. Through him, Aroke was able to launder proceeds of multiple scams to the tune of over N31million. The duo enjoy a cozy business relationship that saw Ibrahim travel to Malaysia twice between September and October 2012 at the instance of Aroke.
When Aroke was arrested, a search conducted by EFCC operatives on his apartment led to the recovery of several items such as laptops, iPad phones, travelling documents, cheque books, flash drives, internet modem, and three exotic cars - a Mercedes Benz Jeep, One 4Matic Mercedes Benz Car and a Range Rover Sport SUV.
Operatives of the EFCC also downloaded over 80 implicating documents from the laptops recovered from him.

What it takes to be a one percenter

To get into the Top 1%, you needed $370,000 in 2010.

It doesn't take a million bucks to get into the top 1%.

In fact, it took a little less than $370,000 in adjusted gross income in 2010 to make it into this elite group, according to newly released data from the Internal Revenue Service. That's up slightly from the $352,000 the year before.
But on average, the top 1% earned $1.12 million, up from $980,000 the year before.
The top 1% have been in the spotlight since Occupy Wall Street protesters first began camping out in cities across the U.S. last fall. The presidential campaign also centered on the haves and have nots, with President Obama calling for tax increases on the rich and challenger Mitt Romney arguing that taxing the wealthy would hurt the economy.
That fight continues as the two parties look to resolve the fiscal cliff crisis.
The fortunes of the top 1% are highly dependent on the stock market since much of their wealth comes from investments. Looking at the past decade, the club had its most exclusive year in 2007, when the stock market was roaring. It took more than $426,000 in adjusted gross income to make it into the top 1% that year.
There were 1.35 million households that qualified for entry. They earned nearly 19% of the nation's income and paid roughly 37% of its income tax.
The growth of the top 1%'s income has been the subject of heated debate over the past year as data show their earnings growing far faster than the less fortunate.
Incomes for the top 1% grew 241% between 1979 and 2007, compared to 11% for the bottom fifth and 19% for the middle fifth, according to statistics compiled by the left leaning Economic Policy Institute.

Shameful: See inside the Nigerian Police College, Lagos

I have no words to describe this, but thankfully they say pictures tell a thousand words. This is the deplorable state of the Nigeria Police College, Ikeja, Lagos...the first police college in the country, built in 1940.

Channels TV exposed the deplorable conditions of the dormitories at the training college where recruits spend months to get training to become police officers. The condition of the hostels, the bathrooms, and even the way they feed is so shameful. N150 daily meal allowance. There has been no major development at the college since it was built in the 40's except for a few renovations. They even still use type-writer. The College was built for 700 students, but now has 2,554 trainees. See for yourself after the cut...

Sanusi gave the suggestion at an inter-faith dinner organized by the Northern Reawakening Forum (NRF) in Abuja, on Tuesday.

Nigeria: Cell Phones for Farmers to Cut Corruption, Deliver Services

Photo: Tami Hultman / AllAfrica
Dr. Akin Adesina, Nigeria's Minister of Agriculture
Abuja — Nigeria's agriculture minister today responded to a barrage of criticism about the planned distribution of cell phones to the country's poorest farmers.
Opposition politicians attacked the idea, and news articles and editorials criticized it as ill conceived. Yesterday, for example, the widely read Punch newspaper, said farmers need fertilizer and other goods, not phones. The paper quoted a farmers' association member saying the funds government approves for agriculture are "hijacked" before reaching farmers.

Obasanjo Acolytes Plan Two-Day Birthday Celebration

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo
By SaharaReporters, New York
Acolytes of former Nigeria President, Olusegun Obasanjo, plan a two-day long birthday celebration for him despite not knowing his real date of birth.,The group will hold a series of events on January 18 and 19, at his presidential library in Abeokuta in Ogun State.
As part of the event, former Ghana president John Kuffour will deliver a public lecture entitled, "Obasanjo in the eyes of history." the former president is also working hard to launch another international foundation to rival that of former US president Bill Clinton to revamp his badly battered international repution after he failed in a bid to stand for third term in office in 2006.
President Goodluck Jonathan is recorded on the invitation card as the "guest of honor" in an event that is being viewed as a political gathering of Obasanjo loyalists, but sources close to Obasanjo said Jonathan has not responded to the invitation.  Vice President Namadi Sambo has indicated he will attend.
Bankrolling the event include some state governors, such as Delta State governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, Akwa Ibom governor, Godswill Akpabio, Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, and several others.
The former Nigerian leader had recently engaged in public spat against Mr. Jonathan over his plans to run for office again, publicly criticizing him for poor governance and incompetence.
The celebrations also come at a time Obasanjo’s reputation has taken considerable hammering.  Following Ghana’s recent presidential election, he was roundly criticized and disowned by the Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS), for which he had served as head of an election observer mission, for his anti-democracy activities.

Revealed: How UI Don Died On Top Of Female Student!

. Why School Authorities Tried To Kill The Story
When a top rated lecturer of the University of Ibadan died recently, staff and students of the institution as well as the general public were made to believe that the Professor slumped while trying to buy some items in a market in Ibadan.
Findings have however revealed that the 51-year-old lecturer whose health had been a topic of discussion among staff and students who knew him closely met his rather untimely death after an amorous encounter with a secret lover. The news of how he died in the hands of the lover has started spreading around the university though the authorities quickly started a damage control process in order to suppress the story. Most lecturers would rather not talk about it as they all seem to have adopted the “you don’t speak ill of the dead” approach. Street Journal has however found out that the issue is more of a matter of “let he that has no sin cast the first stone”. Reason being that it has become common knowledge that a very high percentage of lecturers in the institution engage in the same act.
His Department in the Faculty of Arts is one of those particularly noted for sexual harassment. One of his colleagues who lives in the staff quarters has a willing accomplice in another lecturer who lives in his boys’ quarters. The lecturer who stays in the BQ is encouraged by the fact that his family stays outside the campus and he goes home only on weekends. During the week, he gets “served” in the boys quarters by female students who do not want to fail the courses he teaches.
Earlier in the year, a Doctor in the Institute of Educational Management was shown the way out of the university sequel to several allegations bordering on sexual harassment and misconduct. Though there had been several allegations in the past and talks around the Department that the lecturer is “wicked in bed”, the Doctor never had his cup full until his encounter with one of the post graduate students in the Department who had “proved stubborn” for so long . The encounter was the last straw.
The lecturer’s undoing was his belief that the girl would not try to hit back. After the lady had succumbed to pressures from the notorious Doctor, a date was fixed while a suitable venue was also agreed on for “action”. The student who felt she had a point to prove carried recording equipment which were placed in strategic locations within the room.
When she eventually took action against the lecturer, he denied ever being involved in such. His denials were however punctured by the video evidence that was tendered before the Staff Disciplinary Committee. He was subsequently found guilty and his appointment terminated.
Street Journal gathered that similar fates have befallen lecturers in History Department, which has produced a Vice Chancellor of the institution and also the Department of Adult Education.
Students disclosed that when it comes sexual harassment, all cadres of lecturers are involved. It is not a function of age, class or position. Street Journal found out from the students of the institution that senior lecturers and professors are involved. They went as far as stating that some members of the University’s Senate are not exempted while some of the students opined that even those who constitute the Disciplinary Committees may not be clean after all.
Findings revealed that while those in the University’s Senate try to be as discreet in their affairs as possible, some of the students they have slept with are not so careful. Some have shown text messages and other proofs of their relationships with the dons to some of their friends and fellow students.

‘Discovery of oil, gas in U.S, India, others threatens Nigeria’

THE competition against Nigeria’s oil and gas has become stiffer with the discovery of the mineral resources in countries that used to depend on crude oil imports from Nigeria.
The discovery of crude oil in the United States (U.S) was the first major set back for the country oil and gas sector.
Nigeria was the U.S highest exporter of the essential product, but had to reduce its import from Nigeria due to its crude oil and shale gas discovery.

UNIBEN Don Finds Cure For HIV/AIDS

After two years of rigorous work, history is being made here in Nigeria:
Prof. Isaiah Ibeh of the University of Benin, on Tuesday announced the development of a new drug that can ‘cure’ HIV and AIDS. Ibeh, who is the Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences of the university, confirmed to reporters in Benin that the drug had undergone “series of successful tests”.
According to him, research on the project was started in 2010 and culminated in the development of “Deconcotion X (DX)–Liquid or Bioclean 11 for the cure of HIV and AIDS”. “The existing retroviral drugs are intervention drugs for the management of AIDS but our new discovery is a possible cure," he assured.

Jonathan Gives Almost N1billion To Turai, Others As 'Severance'?

The presidency has paid nearly N1billion to the family of late President Umaru Yar'Adua, according to an official memo obtained in Abuja. The slush funds were routed through the Katsina State government, the home state of the former president.

The payment includes about N150 million to Mrs. Turai Yar'adua, as well as others to the late president's aged mother, his married daughters, and sons.

Although the controversial former First Lady has got the biggest payout, it would be recalled that it she who pushed Nigeria to the brink of a political crisis between 2009 and May 2010 while her late husband was hospitalized in Saudi Arabia.

Mrs. Yar'Adua was at the head of a cabal of Ministers, aides and security agents that manipulated the nation for many tense months as they clung to power, almost leading to the collapse of the government.

It remains unclear if Yar-adua's second wife, Hauwa Umar Radda, whom the late president divorced in 1997, benefited from the "free Nigerian money".

A MUST READ! True Life Story by the Richest Man in Hollywood

I came across this interesting testimony by Tyler Perry and thought I should share:
A few years ago I was getting these really insane water bills. I mean HIGH! So I decided to dig some wells in my yard to have water for my landscape. I live alone, so I know it had to be from watering the grass.
So I hired a company to come out and dig these wells. The foreman and I walked all around my yard and as we were walking he was putting down flags. I asked what the flags were for. He said,
"The flags represent good places to dig for water." I asked, "Why do you have so many flags?" He said, "I'm not sure if any of these places will produce water." I said, "Hold up, you mean if you dig all these spots and don't hit water I still have to pay you?" He said, "Yes, that's how it goes." I said, "Ok, fine." Needless to say, he dug three wells and never hit water. I said, "Just stop."

Fellow Nigerians, let me begin by sending you all the traditional Happy New Year greeting, and the very best wishes, even if I already know in my true heart that our happiness in 2013 has started on a shaky footing. Seriously speaking, our government established a strange trend last year when on January 1, 2012, of all days, it virtually removed its controversial subsidy on petroleum products, and instantly succeeded in throwing our country into a quandary and conundrum of dangerous proportions. It was as if tomorrow would never arrive unless that ill-thought, fiendish, selfish, irresponsible decision was accepted and sustained by hapless Nigerians.

It's Now Obvious that 2013 is the Window to 2015

If anyone was left in doubt, the President – or those pushing for him – have sounded the beagle; forget any pretence to the contrary: the race for 2015 has begun!

Ghost posters appearing overnight all over the capital city, with the President waking up to deny (not denounce!) having a hand in it isn’t anything new. Same politicians, same old trick.

The President or his “promoters” are making an early start of it, sending the message to his party folk that the issue of him having a “second term” is foregone and those who want to negotiate (and benefit) or fight (and lose) can make their choices.

My Secret Life: Aisha Yusuf, Entrepreneur, 33

aisha_3
My parents are…my mother is my best friend. I developed my entrepreneurial drive from her, because even at 62 years of age, she has hotels in almost all the states in the northern Nigeria  and Dubai. My father is late. He was a real estate developer. He was focused, disciplined and never mistook love for discipline. We all grew up knowing right from wrong at a very tender age. They really played a huge part in what I’m doing today.

The household I grew up in… I grew up in Maiduguri, Borno State. Even though it was a very big house, we were close-knit and were almost always together. I think this was due to the influence of my father.

6 Habits of Remarkably Likeable People

They lose the power pose.

I know: Your parents taught you to stand tall, square your shoulders, stride purposefully forward, drop your voice a couple of registers, and shake hands with a firm grip.

It's great to display nonverbal self-confidence, but go too far and it seems like you're trying to establish your importance. That makes the "meeting" seem like it's more about you than it is the other person--and no one likes that.

No matter how big a deal you are you pale in comparison to say, oh, Nelson Mandela. So take a cue from him. Watch how he greets Bill Clinton, no slouch at this either.

Clinton takes a step forward (avoiding the "you must come to me" power move); Mandela steps forward with a smile and bends slightly forward as if, ever so slightly, to bow (a clear sign of deference and respect in nearly every culture); Clinton does the same. What you have are two important people who put aside all sense of self-importance or status. They're genuine.
