Dangote-led flood relief committee raises 12 billion naira


Nigeria’s business man and industrialist, Alhaji Aliko Dangote led the team of charitable individuals on Thursday to donate massively for flood victims, donating a sum of N2.5 billion naira with the committee eventually realizing about N12 billion.
Though Globacom boss, Mike Adenuga ,the Chief Launcher of the committee did not show up for the event, he sent his donation of N500 million.
In his opening speech, President Jonathan had canvassed for support from well meaning individuals and corporate bodies to donate generously to assist the Government’s donation of N2.5 billion.


While assuring members of the committee that the government will not meddle in its affairs, Jonathan said they were free to disburse the money generated in the way they seem fit.
He added that the though the FG was still in the process of the flood impact assessment, it had released N9.7 billion to the Ministry of Agriculture for food and agricultural seedling and N2.5billion to the Ministry of Health for disease control.
Jim Ovia and Arthur Eze also donated N1 billion each while Governor Peter Obi of Anambra state on behalf of the Governors’ forum donated N1.8 billion.
Meanwhile the FG has announced tax incentives for corporate bodies that donated towards the cause of the flood victim’s relief and rehabilitation.
The Chairman of the committee was quick to add that out of his N2.5 billion donation, he had given 200 million to the Kogi State Government while N150 million was made available to run the secretariat of the committee.
He assured Nigerians that the money realised will be used judiciously to assist the flood victims as every penny would be accounted for.
In addition, he tasked telecommunication service providers In Nigeria to donate at least N1.00 of every cost of sms made by each subscriber to the cause.
Corporate organisations such as Julius Berger, RCC, Dantata, Setraco among others also gave generously.
